It seems that kids just get out of school for the summer, and within a few weeks, the back to school sales start. Besides Black Friday, back to school sales offer perhaps the biggest bang for your buck. Whether you have kids who are in school, or your kids are all grown, you can still utilize the back to school sales to help you to save money on supplies that you need all year long.
Favorite Items to Buy for Maximum Savings
Buy a Laptop. If you’re in the market for a new laptop, shop the back to school sales. You’ll see laptops discounted significantly as stores try to appeal to high school and college students. Of course, you can buy a laptop for yourself now at rock bottom prices.
Stock Up on Clothes. Retailers also offer clothes at a steep discount. This is the perfect time to stock up for your children and yourself. Of course, buy what they’ll need for the beginning of the year, but if you also gift your children with clothes at Christmas, buy them now while they’re discounted.
If your child has to wear a uniform, buy two sizes—one that your child can wear now and one that he will grow into. When my child had to wear navy blue dress pants as part of his school uniform, we found them at Costco for $12. (They’re only available at Costco for about two to three weeks a year, so you have to keep a close look out for them.) We bought the size he was currently wearing plus a few in the next size up. Every year, come January, he was ready for the next size up. If we hadn’t bought them in advance on sale, we likely would have paid 2 to 3 times more in January when we needed them.
Buy Art Supplies. My kids love doing art projects at home, so during the back to school sales, I buy a lot of supplies that we’ll need beyond what they need for school. For instance, Amazon just had a 60 pack of Elmer’s glue sticks for .18 a piece. I bought the pack without hesitation. We’ll use many for school, but my kids will also use them for crafts throughout the year.
I also gift my kids with art supplies at Christmas, so I buy a few of these at discounted prices during the back to school sales.
Other Ways to Save
Use the Tax Free Weekend. If your state offers a tax free weekend, buy at least some of your items then to save even more money. However, don’t buy everything you need this weekend only. Remember to shop the sales throughout the four to six week back to school sale cycle to reap maximum savings.
Shop a Variety of Stores. Of course, shop office supply stores and places like Walmart and Target, but don’t forget your local grocery store. Some of the best deals I found last year came from the grocery store. Also, Amazon can have some impressive sales, so take the time to shop around.
